Character Name: Edwin Payne
Series: Dead Boy Detectives
Age: Edwin is technically 16 as that is the age he died, but he then spent 70 years in Hell where he was tortured constantly and some 30 years on Earth with his entire goal and motivation being to help spirits move on. Edwin has faced a lot of situations that living adults would likely not survive and while he has definitely been affected by them, he has shown a lot of resistance as well. As such, he's incredibly mature for his 'age'.
From When?: Episode 7: The Case of the Very Long Stairway - After Charles rescues Edwin from Hell and the Night Nurse leaves.
Warden Justification:
Given Edwin often comes off to people initially as prickly, rude even, condescending and definitely stuck up, it’s little wonder that someone might wonder why the Admiral would decide “yes, this dead 16 year old will be great warden material”. And while Edwin definitely has his negative traits and areas where he could stand to improve or change his slightly outdated views, he isn’t just those aspects of his personality and, more importantly even, he’s shown to be willing to work on them for himself and the sake of others. A good example is how, during the series, Edwin initially refers to “female hysteria” as an actual condition and has to be told that isn’t correct or polite. While he’s initially somewhat rude to Crystal about it, he later modifies his language and changes how he talks about the topic altogether with a female ghost who he knows will be quite distressed already with the conversation.
Edwin is also tenacious when it comes to a challenge or a problem and will work on solving it with the sort of single-minded focus that was likely what enabled him to manage to escape Hell in the first place. Given his situation in Hell was an eternity of being hunted and torn apart by a monster, it would have been easy for Edwin to give up, resign himself to his fate, or resort to worse means in order to survive. But despite 70 years of being trapped there, he still remains someone who makes it his eternity's work to try and help solve problems for others and help ghosts move on to their afterlife.
He isn't perfect and he still has things to learn and ways he can change, but he would give being a warden just as much time, focus, and dedication as he does his detective work.
Item: Edwin’s warden item will take the form of his notebook. It’s a small, palm-sized book that he keeps in his breast pocket and frequently takes notes in during cases as well as holds his map of Hell and how he escaped (and how Charles was able to find him).
Abilities/Powers:
Mirror hopping - Edwin can travel between mirrors with no apparent limit on distance, however he can't bring anyone living with him. In the barge this would be limited only to places that he could travel to on foot and not into places which are protected or off-limits to him. Travel to other character's rooms will only be done with discussion prior.
Intangibility - As a ghost, Edwin can choose when he is and isn't tangible, allowing him to pass through solid objects easily and avoid bumping into people who can't see him, but also means that he can pick up and interact with things and people in the world around him without issue. For the most part Edwin primarily uses this to walk through walls and doors (opening them is for the living) so I would like to keep this if possible.
Invisibility - Ghosts typically cannot be seen or heard by humans unless the human has some ties to the supernatural or has had a near-death experience. This will be gone completely on the barge since an invisible warden who can't be heard is not especially useful. Edwin has to deal with people seeing and hearing him and his snarky comments like anyone else now.
Possession - Ghosts are capable of possessing the living if they wish, however it's difficult, the living host can fight back to regain control, and it isn't a great time for anyone involved. Edwin has never done this and hates the idea, but it is an ability he has. If it were to ever come up in game it would only be in extreme circumstances and with extensive discussion between players, given Edwin is extremely against the idea.
Magic - Over his years of being dead, Edwin has amassed a collection of magical abilities and items. The majority of his abilities are from spell books that Edwin has collected over the decades, and he's shown to reference them frequently throughout the series. If possible having his library of books would be great but I am willing to have him come without them or limit him to one or two if required.
Linguistic skills - Edwin knows a lot of different languages such as ancient Aramaic and has been shown to be able to piece together translations of ancient runes as well. I will likely only keep this in relation to his spellbooks occasionally being in strange languages and anything in relation to other characters' possessions and his ability to understand them will be discussed with the players.
Vulnerability: Iron - All ghosts are particularly vulnerable to iron; it burns them and forces them to become tangible for a brief period.
Vulnerability: Magic - All ghosts are able to be targetted and effected by magic and magic users are able to see and detect them. Certain spells are able to capture ghosts or destroy them entirely.
Vulnerability: Cats - Especially great given how many cats are on the barge, but cat scratches are like poison to ghosts and enough of them can cause serious harm. Edwin describes the sensation as burning. This and the above vulnerabilities will remain.
Wardening Strategies and Philosophies:
Given his long history of solving cases with great success in the Dead Boy Detective Agency, Edwin is likely going to immediately try to apply similar strategies to his wardening. He is very precise and structured in his work and almost always takes the lead in the investigating and planning parts of the actual detective work, tending to leave Charles to the actual job of getting his hands dirty. Expect his case board to become his inmate board and there just to be so many details about every aspect of them.
A good example of how Edwin is likely to approach wardening initially is how he approached Niko's illness. He immediately wrote a list of (very dated) questions to ask to learn more, started researching in his books, and took control of the investigation. Factors like how Niko might feel about everything happening to her or her poor health weren't as important to him and he expressed frustration that he couldn't immediately get the information and solve the problem he was facing.
As such, he will likely see his inmate as another challenge to be solved and struggle when it turns out to not be quite that straightforward. Especially if, heaven forbid, he has to get emotional and connect with his inmate or others on the barge. Edwin is well aware that he is not always good with people – a fact that he points out the Charles shortly after their initial meeting. During life he tended to keep to himself and was subsequently bullied by the boys at their school and his people skills hardly improved with 70 years in Hell. While he does marginally better after his years spent with Charles, it’s apparent that Edwin lets very few people get too close to him and struggles with emotionally charged situations or people who, well. Aren't Charles.
That said, while he can be very guarded with people, Edwin does have a caring side as well and would likely extend that to others he formed friendships or saw a level of kinship with. Canonically, this is most apparent with his first meeting with Charles; having only recently escaped Hell, Edwin came across another boy in a similar situation as himself, bullied and dying, and chose to keep Charles company until he passed to avoid causing him any further distress.
In addition to being challenged by dealing with emotional hurdles, Edwin will likely also struggle with inmates who have more violent pasts and inclinations. Edwin is not inclined to violence himself and resists even learning to box as a form of self-defence, and when Charles is thought to have killed the Night Nurse while protecting Edwin from being taken to Hell, Edwin is shown to be shocked that Charles would go that far and worried about his friend. Facing inmates who have killed many people or worse, sometimes even enjoying it or seeing it as just another occupation, would be unsettling for Edwin and definitely put him outside of his comfort zone. Particularly as he would also need to realise that his own beliefs and sensibilities can’t be applied to others in order to help them graduate.
Ultimately Edwin would likely come around to enjoy and rise to this challenge though; he’s shown to enjoy the chance to apply himself to new problems and situations, and while there will definitely be an adjustment period and areas he can in turn grow and develop in, his own willingness to push on against adversary and help people would make him a very skilled warden.
Deal: Edwin asks for the Admiral to ensure that he will not be sent to Hell. (He is unaware that this problem will be solved in the series itself)

[The camera turns on and it’s Edwin in his office, but instead of his more traditional seat behind his desk, he’s standing in front of what appears to be a large whiteboard. His neat, precise handwriting has drawn up two headings, one that reads “creatures” and another that reads “media”.]
I’ve been strongly advised- [By which he means teased, by Hanna.] -that there may be some gaps in my knowledge given that the other members of the agency aren’t here with me and I’m unfamiliar with some of the… different cultures and expressions that have become common here.
[He leans forwards a little on his toes before rocking back again.] So in the interests of improving my own understanding here, I’ve decided to put certain questions to the network as a whole. There are some topics I would appreciate having an explanation of and I would also welcome further topics I should consider researching.
[Turning on his heel to face the board, Edwin uncaps a marker with a flourish and starts writing on the board.]
Apparently there is a Queen Mercury that I need to listen to? [He prints this neatly under “media”, then moves to the other heading.] And a sort of creature I have had mentioned to me several times now.
[Stepping away, Edwin caps the marker and taps it under the word “Twinks”.] So lets start here. Could someone please explain to me what these “twinks” are?
